CHAPTER TWENTY THREE

The crowd screamed.

Bodie wasn’t subtle in any way, firing into the air three times. Faces flinched away. Bodies dived for cover. Bodie and his team were suddenly free of the crush.

He broke into a run, leaping over several prone bodies and hurdling a couple of kneeling men. From the edges of the crowd, the police gave chase, shouting into their radios as they came. Their enemy made the decision to attack and converged from one side and ahead. Bodie ran straight for them. Those ahead numbered only four and were going to be a far easier prospect than all those behind.

Pang had clearly decided this was now do or die. He drew his own gun and fired it, shooting an attacker in the stomach and another in the shoulder. Both men twisted and went down. Heidi fired too, her bullets passing between men and pinging off a stone building behind them.

Bodie escaped the crowd and ran for the side street. To his mind there was only one way out of this. He looked for someone either sitting in or hovering around their car. The perfect candidate was up ahead—a young man staring at his bright blue Audi S4 as if trying to decide what kind of present to buy it. Bodie jumped on the comms.

“To the right. Blue Audi.”

Without waiting for their confirmations, he ran up to the young man, brandished the gun and asked for the key. He threw the car door open and got behind the wheel. A quick glance behind showed that a good portion of Galahad’s twenty-plus were following. Cassidy, he reckoned, was only twenty feet in front of them.

Pang whirled and fired at them, taking two down and tripping another three. Cassidy sped past him. Grudgingly, yet again, Bodie had to admit that Pang was a major asset in a fight.

He brought the engine into life and started the car rolling forward. Doors were flung open. Jemma jumped into the back, followed by Yasmine. Lucie leapt in the other side, looking red-faced and spent. Heidi was running alongside the moving car, facing backward, aiming at their enemies.

She fired six shots. Bodie heard men crying out. He came to a junction and crossed it slowly, thanking their good fortune that no other vehicles were in motion. A glance into the rearview told him that Galahad’s men were still coming en masse.

“Get the fuck in the car, Heidi,” he shouted into the comms. “This isn’t a jogging commercial.”

Jemma made way in the back. Heidi climbed in and took up all the remaining room. That left Cassidy and Pang out there with one seat available beside Bodie. They would have to make do.

Both were still coming, covering the rear, steadily approaching the rolling Audi. Bodie saw another junction up ahead. This cross street was busier, but he still thought Pang and Cassidy had time.

The driver’s wing mirror shattered, blown off by a bullet. Bodie slowed even more. Pang and Cassidy were at the passenger’s side of the car.
